Unesco World Heritage

For this assignment we were given a XML file which contained information about the Unesco World Heritage list. The list consists of 911 properties forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. My Idea was to visualize the evolution of the list through time.

Since Unesco was founded by western countries you will see that the criteria (that is being used to be nominated for the list) is based on western standards. This resulted in allot of western countries being nominated in the early days of the list. Nearing the 90s you will see a rise of the non-western countries.

The interactive map contains black ellipses represent the geo-locations of the World Heritage sites, the colored ellipses represent the different categories the sites are in. Interacting with the sites will give you additional information about the site.

In additional I created a simple poster showing the additions for each year.
